About Captain Willy Vega

Welcome to my sportfishing company, located in the beautiful Playa Tamarindo, Costa Rica! My journey began at 16, when I attended nautical mechanics school in Puntarenas, on Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast. After graduating, I worked as a mechanic on Chinese long-line commercial ships for three years, where my passion for sportfishing was ignited.

I spent five years on a mother ship in the North Pacific, which also served as a scuba diving vessel. During this time, I became a certified dive master, gaining even more experience with the ocean. Later, I worked as a mechanic engineer on a private yacht based in Playa Flamingo, leading long voyages to Nicaragua and Panama.

It was on one of these trips that I met Randy Wilson, a pioneer of sportfishing tourism in Tamarindo. Randy became my mentor, teaching me the ins and outs of the industry. Inspired by his guidance, I pursued my dream of owning my own boat and launching a sportfishing company.

For over a decade, I’ve been proud to share my expertise with visitors from around the world, offering unforgettable fishing experiences while promoting sustainable practices. My ultimate goal is to combine professionalism, fun, and a deep respect for the ocean.

Beyond running my company, I’ve taken an active role in the political and social aspects of the fishing industry. I’ve represented the province of Guanacaste at the Costa Rican Institute of Fishing and Aquaculture, served as president of the Nautical Association of Playa Tamarindo, and currently sit on the board of directors of Guanacaste’s largest fishing organization, which encompasses 40 groups.
